The Irrationality of Superstition

The Irrationality of Superstition

Many people have superstitions about a wide variety of things. It could be something related to Game Day or it could be something more sinister in nature. But what all superstitions have in common is that they are the response to an irrational fear of something (losing, bad luck, death, sickness, etc). Regardless of what you believe I think we can all agree that fear, especially irrational fear, is unhealthy and unwanted. Instead work on overcoming your fears and losing your superstitions!

“A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.” – Groucho Marx

A Faith That is Out of Sight

Jake Olson ended up losing both eyes to cancer when he was very young. However, he did not let this immensely difficult time or this disability keep him down. Instead he placed his faith in God and became inspiration to thousands (including his favorite football team)!

Jake is an inspiring example for anyone, with or without disabilities. The cancer may have taken his eyes, but it did not take his will. Don’t let the things you can’t control shake your faith. Believe, like Jake does, that you can overcome anything no matter what!

How to Be Whatever You Want to Be

How to Be Whatever You Want to Be

“You may be whatever you resolve to be. Determine to be something in the world and you will be something. ‘I cannot,’ never accomplished anything; ‘I will try,’ has wrought wonders.” – J. Hawes

A new year is often a time for new resolutions. But what about the ones you didn’t complete from last year? A new year, a new day, a new situation – it doesn’t matter. There isn’t certain time for achieving your dreams, that time should be now! Take your resolutions and meet them no matter what. Become who you want to be right now. Don’t worry about failure because a “can do” attitude will turn your stumbling blocks into stairs to success.

The Change You Want to See

The Change You Want to See is Up to You

The tide of the ocean, the rising and setting of the sun, the movement of the earthquake, the fall of the rain – these are all things that you have no control over. But there are things in life that you can control to varying degrees.

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Gandhi

Are you happy with your career, your relationships, your spiritual life, your living situation, or your body? If not, then work towards changing it! Do you see a problem in your community or country that no one is fixing? Then work towards changing it! You can’t sit around waiting for change to just happen, you have to take action. Whatever you want, do it!

Doubting Leads to Believing

Doubting Leads to Believing

What is your spiritual life like? Is it strong from years of faith? Is it still taking baby steps as you are learning and growing? This may go against what you’ve heard, but I believe that no matter where you are in life you should challenge your state of spirituality.

“The beginning of wisdom is found in doubting; by doubting we come to the question, and by seeking we may come upon the truth.” – Pierre Abelard

There is such a thing as faith, and the point of faith is that you will not understand everything. But there has to be a basis for your faith, and the more you question it the stronger it will become. By seeking further inquiry into your beliefs you will look at spirituality in ways you hadn’t before. In many ways doubting leads to deeper truths and a more meaningful spiritual life.

The Butterfly Effect

I’ll admit that there have been times when I’ve wondered if what I do matters. Am I just going through the motions or is there a point to it all? Well let me reiterate a very important truth: what you do does matter! It matters not just in life, but in the lives of others.

In your home, in your job, in your church, and in your community you are surrounded by people with whom you interact and share a connection. Everything you do, no matter how small, will caste some sort of ripples. You never know who those ripples will affect, but just know they are having an effect. You are a unique individual who will positively impact the lives of many, including people you haven’t even met yet. Realize your purpose and go make a difference!

When Walking Through Hell

When Walking Through Hell

Imagine you are stranded in a remote location with harsh desert spreading out for endless miles around you. Throat parched, lips cracked, you cannot see an end in sight. Do you sit down and give up, or do you keep going?

“If you’re going through hell, keep going.” – Winston Churchill

The desert scenario can be applied to many of the problems we face in life. It may seem like all hope is lost, like there is no end in sight, like the burden is just too heavy. But you have to keep going. Pain and troubles are temporary, but only if you keep hoping and keeping moving forward. If you stop you will be stuck in that personal hell forever. Encourage yourself and others to keep going!

Grateful 365 Days a Year

This video is a great reminder that we should all be living with an attitude of gratefulness. Every day there is something to be thankful for. It could be a big obvious thing or a smaller less noticeable thing. The problem is most people are so busy they only catch the big things.

This video really makes me want to start my own 365 project. I believe it will cause me to become more appreciative of life, nature, my relationships, and my surroundings and in doing so make me a happier person. Will you take the 365 challenge?

Life is Like a Cup of Coffee

Suppose that life is like coffee and our job, finances, and position in life are the cup that surrounds it. Sometimes I just care too much about the cup. When I watch this video it is a great inspiration to me, reminding me to enjoy the coffee as well. Don’t get so caught up in things that ultimately do not matter. Don’t stress, argue, and worry to the point that you miss the sweet taste of life. Love one another and cherish the things that truly matter!

Today is the Day

How was your life in 2013? What kinds of goals did you have, and did you achieve them? The beginning of a new year is the time for retrospection. But don’t be disheartened if you didn’t accomplish everything you wanted to. This is also a time for looking forward. 2014 is, after all, a new year. Today is your day and the time is now. Revive broken relationships. Reach that new max on the bench. Achieve the promotion you want in your job. Don’t let your failings in 2013 keep you from your true potential in 2014!
